A Call for Transparency: Memorial Day and the Reality on Main Street
We believe that trust and open communication are the cornerstones of a thriving community. Unfortunately, we feel that the Town of Red River—and specifically the administration under Mayor Linda Calhoun—has failed to provide guests, residents, and local business owners with the transparency they deserve regarding the true atmosphere of this Memorial Day weekend.
First and foremost, we deeply respect our fallen heroes. Memorial Day holds profound, solemn significance for us and our family. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and honor, and we fully support observances that pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
However, the town's recent administrative actions have created a confusing and misleading environment. The unilateral decision to cancel Mayfest in the Mountains—a distinctly family-oriented event—was executed without meaningful community input or clear public explanation. Simultaneously, we are witnessing the visible return of biker vendors to Main Street. Given the tragic and deeply felt impact of the 2023 downtown shooting, the unannounced reintroduction of this specific rally atmosphere is both jarring and poorly handled by town leadership.
To be absolutely clear: we are not inherently opposed to a biker rally. Motorcyclists have long been a part of the local tourism ecosystem. What we are fundamentally opposed to is the quiet, unannounced merging of two drastically different environments while leadership publicly pretends otherwise.
Families, local businesses, and visitors deserve honesty about the environment they are stepping into so they can make informed decisions. Consider the impact:
- Families arriving with the expectation of a quiet, family-friendly mountain getaway are caught off guard.
- Businesses are left guessing how to properly staff, stock, and prepare for the weekend's true demographic.
- Visitors attending for the rally are met with a town that seems hesitant to publicly welcome them.
If town leadership made the conscious decision to bring back the rally environment for this holiday weekend, they had a fundamental responsibility to communicate that openly. Instead, a reliance on vague messaging and omission has left both locals and visitors completely unprepared for the reality on the ground.
This strategy of silence and mixed signals serves no one well. Red River deserves leadership that respects its stakeholders enough to be upfront about the events taking place on our own Main Street.
