Red River Weekend Preview: Sunny Skies, Crisp Mornings, and a Quiet Fall Weekend

A panoramic view over the town of Red River and its surrounding peaks in 2009.

Friday, October 16, 2026

After a week that brought the season's first hard freeze nights to the valley, Red River settles into a calm, sunny fall weekend, and it is a fine one for being outside. Friday is sunny with a high near 53 degrees after a cold start in the mid-20s, and tonight stays clear with a low near 25. Saturday is the warmest day of the weekend, sunny with a high near 59 and a low near 30, and Sunday is partly cloudy with a high near 59 and a low near 34. No rain is expected during the day all weekend, so jackets in the morning and sunshine by afternoon is the pattern to plan around.

The town calendar is on the quieter side between festivals, which makes this a good weekend to enjoy Red River at an easy pace. The Red River Historical Museum is open Friday and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m., a worthwhile stop for anyone curious about the mining town story behind Main Street. On Saturday, a fitness class meets at the Red River Community House from 10 to 11 a.m., and the Lego Builders Club meets at the Red River Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m., an easy family option for the afternoon. On Sunday, worship services are held at 10:30 a.m. at both First Baptist Church of Red River and Faith Mountain Fellowship Church.

Evenings still belong to Main Street. Red River's live music venues carry the weekend, with Texas Reds Steakhouse hosting musicians in its Lost Love Saloon Thursday through Sunday, and the Mother Lode Saloon and the Bull O' the Woods Saloon also known for live music in classic Western settings. A stroll through town for dinner, a drink, and a set of music is about as good as a mid-October night gets here, just bring a warm layer for the walk back under a clear, cold sky.

This is also a sweet spot in the year for the Enchanted Circle drive and for trails around town, with late-season fall color, quiet roads, and crisp air that makes a midday hike feel perfect. It is the calm between seasons: Oktoberfest wrapped up last weekend at Brandenburg Park, and the ski season is now in sight. At Red River Ski and Summer Area, season passes are in their second pricing tier through December 10, with the Platinum Pass at 679 dollars for adults and the Weekender Pass at 479 dollars for adults, ahead of a projected opening day on Thursday, November 26, Thanksgiving Day.

Looking one weekend further ahead, the Rio Grande Sky Fiesta is scheduled for October 24 and 25 in Los Luceros, near Espanola, a colorful regional outing within reach of a Red River base camp. For this weekend, though, there is no big event to chase and no weather to work around, and that is the charm of it. Come for the sunshine, stay for the music, and enjoy a mountain town breathing easy between fall color and the first real snow.
