Shopping in Red River

Shopping in Red River is a Main Street stroll — nearly every shop in town lines the mile-long main drag or sits just off it, and almost all of them are locally owned. Below is the complete guide to Red River's stores: gift and souvenir shops, clothing, art galleries, ski and outdoor outfitters, candy stores, tasting rooms, the town grocery, and the hardware store — each linked to its own website or Facebook page where one exists.

🛍️ Gift Shops, Souvenirs & Clothing

  • Main Street Mercantile: A large general gift and souvenir store on the west end of Main Street, and a good one-stop shop for presents to take home. It stocks Brighton jewelry, apparel including Life is Good clothing, UGG footwear, and personalized Red River souvenirs, plus natural soaps and goat-milk skincare. A gourmet food section carries coffee, soup mixes, and cocktail mixes for take-home food gifts, alongside children's gifts and home décor accents. Location: 301 W Main St.
  • Red River Trading Company: In business since 1991, this is one of Red River's classic souvenir stops — locals also know it as "The Christmas Store" and "T-Shirt Alley." Shelves of Red River t-shirts and caps, trinkets and souvenirs, and Minnetonka moccasins fill the store, and a year-round selection of Christmas decorations and ornaments makes it a natural first stop for traditional mountain-town souvenirs. Location: 200 E Main St.
  • Bear X-ing: A gift and souvenir shop built around chainsaw-carved wooden bears, moose, and other forest animals — the carved bears out front make it one of the most photographed storefronts on the east end of Main Street. Inside you'll also find cabin décor, New Mexico-made gifts, and jewelry. A fun stop for a carved bear of your own or a piece of rustic décor for the cabin back home. Location: 600 E Main St.
  • Elevations 8750 Shops: Named for Red River's 8,750-foot elevation, this gift and apparel shop on the west end of Main Street is described as the town's one-stop shop for resort needs. It carries gifts and souvenirs plus women's and resort clothing, and keeps long daily hours in season. A handy stop when you need a souvenir, a layer you forgot to pack, or a gift on your way out of town. Location: 201 W Main St.
  • Gold Nugget: A souvenir and gift shop near the west end of Main Street, praised by visitors for its t-shirt and hat selection. It also stocks knives, smudge products, clothing, and general souvenirs. Reviewers describe it as a sister store to Climates on East Main, so fans of one will feel at home in the other. Location: 108 W Main St.
  • Climates: A clothing, footwear, and gift shop on East Main Street. It's known for Red River t-shirts and comfortable footwear brands including Chaco and Oofos, plus accessories such as Groove Life rings and belts. A practical stop for a warm layer, a pair of camp shoes, or a souvenir shirt before you leave the mountains. Location: 307 E Main St.
  • The Spruce: Red River's home décor and gift shop, on East Main Street. It stocks home décor and accent pieces, textiles and blankets, kitchen items, children's items, and soy candles. This is the town's main stop for cabin-style home goods and hostess-style gifts — the place to find something for the house rather than the suitcase. Location: 316 E Main St.
  • Snarkey Malarkey's Gifts Gone Amiss: A humor-first gift shop for shoppers whose souvenir taste runs cheeky rather than traditional. Expect offbeat and irreverent gifts alongside clothing, games, puzzles, and themed gift boxes. This is the stop for a gag gift or a souvenir with a wink, in the same building as The Candy Crate on West Main. Location: 300 W Main St, Ste. B.
  • Frye's Old Town: An Old West-style trading post at the west end of Main Street, and home to the Jewelry Lady Red River, which has sold Native American jewelry in Red River for over 15 years. The trading post also carries Double D Ranchwear clothing, souvenir t-shirts, and gifts, and hosts an old-time shootout attraction in season. Come for the turquoise and stay for the frontier atmosphere. Location: 100 W Main St.

🎨 Art Galleries & Handcrafted Goods

  • Red River Gallery: A fine art gallery in the heart of town showcasing Western and Southwestern art, including masterworks by Kenneth Wyatt, Jake Marshall, Jill Wyatt Marshall, Tyler Crow, and Rodney Watson. It also features the fine art photography of Carl Brown, who has photographed the outdoors for more than 50 years, plus one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry and a curated selection of artisan goods and functional wood pieces. This is where Kenneth Wyatt's work is now sold in Red River. Location: 402 W Main St.
  • Southern Exposure Photography: A photography studio and gallery sharing the 402 W Main St address with Red River Gallery, listed in the Visitor Guide and town directories. This is the stop for professional photography and fine-art photographic prints of Red River and the surrounding mountains — a way to take the Sangre de Cristos home on your wall. Location: 402 W Main St.
  • The Bobcat: A long-running jewelry and Southwestern gift shop on East Main Street. It specializes in Native American jewelry, pottery, rugs, and art artifacts, plus carved animal fetishes. It also stocks canned goods and treats, making it part gallery, part old-fashioned trading post — a browser's shop where the cases reward a slow look. Location: 514 E Main St.
  • Artistic Funk: The studio-shop of a local Red River artisan specializing in "dirty pour" acrylic painting and resin work. Everything here is one of a kind — poured-art pieces and resin goods made locally, in the same building as All Seasons Sports. A good stop for a piece of Red River-made art that no one else will have. Location: 600 W Main St.

🎿 Outdoor Gear, Ski & Sporting Goods

  • Sitzmark Sports & Lodging: Red River's full-service ski shop in the heart of Main Street: ski and snowboard rentals — with advance-reservation delivery to your condo, hotel, or vacation rental — plus boot fitting and a large retail floor carrying brands such as The North Face, Burton, Volcom, Oakley, Smith, Spy, Sorel, Smartwool, Kühl, Orvis, and Costa. The business also runs guided fly-fishing trips on area waters, sells fishing licenses, and has lodging on site, making it a genuine one-stop outfitter. Location: 416 W Main St.
  • Crazy Mountain Sports: An outdoor and sporting goods shop located in the Sitzmark Sports building on West Main Street. It carries Smith and Spy optics, The North Face, Patagonia, Volcom, and Burton apparel, Sorel and Khombu footwear, and souvenir t-shirts. Worth a browse alongside its neighbor for outerwear, optics, and a spare pair of winter boots. Location: 416 W Main St.
  • All Seasons Sports: A full-service ski shop founded in 1970, selling and renting high-performance skis, snowboards, and snowblades. It claims the largest selection of ski clothing, hats, gloves, shoes, and winter clothing in northern New Mexico. The shop operates as a summer store in the warm months too, and shares its West Main address with the Artistic Funk artisan shop. Location: 600 W Main St.
  • Wild Bill's Ski & Snowboard: In business since the 1980s and run by its current owner since 1993, a block and a half from the ski area at the corner of Main and Pioneer. It rents ski and snowboard packages from Basic through Demo, with certified technicians and a Wintersteiger-equipped tune shop that also services visitors' own gear. The retail area stocks gloves, goggles, beanies, caps, sleds, and outerwear; in summer it adds handcrafted jewelry and gifts, toys, and fishing and camping supplies. Location: 325 W Main St.
  • Bighorn Sports & Rentals: Locally owned and operated since 2002. In winter it's a ski and snowboard shop with rental packages for adults and kids plus retail accessories such as goggles and helmets. In summer the same storefront becomes New Mexico Adventure Company, booking guided mountain tours to Greenie Peak, Goose Lake, and Cabresto Lake, plus UTV rentals, whitewater rafting, and horseback rides — one shop, two seasons. Location: 220 E Main St.
  • Taos Mountain Outfitters: The Red River store of the family-owned outfitter founded in Taos in 1969. A full outdoor clothing and gear shop: Patagonia, Kühl, Columbia, Mountain Hardwear, Cotopaxi, Smartwool, and Darn Tough clothing; footwear from Danner, Oboz, Keen, Merrell, and Blundstone; and gear from Osprey, MSR, and Hydro Flask, with a well-stocked camping section. This is the go-to in town for hiking and camping gear rather than ski gear. Location: 121 E Main St.
  • Starr Trading Post & Angler Fly Shop: Part fly shop, part trading post, and described in the town directory as carrying the most extensive fishing inventory in Red River. Expect a full-service fly-fishing and tackle selection — rods and reels, waders, tackle, and flies — plus fishing licenses. The trading-post side stocks clothing, hats, gifts and souvenirs, and educational toys for kids, so the whole family can browse while the anglers gear up. Location: 300 E Main St.
  • G&A Tactical: Red River's licensed firearms dealer, operating under a current federal firearms license held by Jamie Rychlik. It handles firearm sales and transfers from its Beaver Road address, just off Main Street. With no published storefront hours, call ahead if you're arranging a transfer or purchase. Location: 6 Beaver Rd.

🍬 Specialty Food, Candy & Grocery

  • The Candy Crate: Home of Candy Mountain Fudge, a cream-and-butter fudge made here since 1990. The shop also stocks nostalgic, retro, and hard-to-find candies, fine chocolates, New Mexico coffee, specialty foods, glazed nuts, and ice cream, plus a selection of gifts and games. The town's classic candy-store stop — the one kids will lobby for, and most adults won't resist either. Location: 300 W Main St.
  • Red River Candy Company: A second candy shop, on the east end of Main Street, built around vintage and international candy and candy sold by the pound. It also serves boba teas and sodas, making it as much a treat stop as a candy store. Handy when you're staying on the east end of town and the sweet tooth hits. Location: 421 E Main St.
  • Der Markt Food Store: Red River's supermarket and only full grocery store, on West Main Street. This is the in-town stop for produce, meat, pantry staples, and everything you need for cabin cooking, with long daily hours (7 AM to 9 PM per current listings). If your rental has a kitchen, Der Markt is where the week's provisions come from. Location: 307 W Main St.

🍷 Wine, Spirits & Tasting Rooms

  • Noisy Water Winery: The Red River tasting room of the Ruidoso-founded New Mexico winery, established in 2009 by the Riddle family; the Red River room opened in 2019. It pours and sells dry, sweet, sparkling, and port-style New Mexico wines by the bottle, alongside a cheese shop selection of cheeses and olive oil, with a pet-friendly patio out back. It's listed here for its bottle and cheese retail — you'll also find it on the Dining page as a tasting destination. Location: 518 E Main St.
  • Sheehan Winery Tasting Room: The tasting room of Sheehan Winery, founded in 2015 by winemaker Sean Sheehan and making award-winning wines exclusively from New Mexico-grown grapes, including less-common varieties such as Dolcetto and Mourvèdre. The Red River room opened July 4, 2020, pours tastings daily, and sells bottles to go. Its patio faces the Torchlight Parade route, making it a popular après-ski stop in winter. Location: 417 W Main St, Ste. 106.
  • Red River Distillery Tasting Room: The tasting room of Red River Brewing Company & Distillery (the brewery itself is at 217 W Main St), on the east end of Main Street. It pours the distillery's house spirits — including its Black Copper Rye Whiskey — and sells bottles to take home. The retail counterpart to the brewery's presence on the Dining page. Location: 619 E Main St.
  • Motherlode Liquor Store: The package liquor store attached to the Motherlode Saloon, and Red River's dedicated liquor store. It stocks beer, wine, and spirits for takeout, with a notably strong craft and IPA beer selection for a small mountain town. This is the stop for stocking the cabin fridge and bar before a ski weekend or a summer porch evening. Location: 412 E Main St.

🔨 Hardware & General Store

  • Gold Hill Hardware and Lumber Co.: Red River's hardware store, one block off Main Street on High Street — formerly Williams Trading Post & Hardware, so longtime visitors may know it by that name. It stocks hardware and plumbing supplies, lumber, and RV supplies, and in trading-post tradition it also carries fishing gear and sells fishing licenses. The in-town source for cabin repair supplies, tools, and last-minute project needs. Location: 306 E High St.

💡 Shopping Tips

  • Walk it end to end: Nearly every shop on this page lines Main Street or sits a block off it — park once and browse the whole town on foot.
  • Hours follow the seasons: Most shops keep their longest hours during ski season and summer; expect shorter days in the quiet spring and fall weeks, and check ahead for a must-visit store.
  • Gear up in town: Red River's ski and outdoor shops rent as well as sell — you can outfit a whole ski trip, from boots to base layers, after you arrive.
  • Take New Mexico home: Local wines, green chile specialties, Native American jewelry, and carved bears travel well and beat a generic souvenir.
  • Provisioning is covered: Der Markt handles groceries, the Motherlode's package store handles beer, wine, and spirits, and Gold Hill handles the hardware run — a cabin stay needs no trip down the mountain.
