Greenie Peak in Late Fall: One Last Climb Before Snow

The view from the rocky summit of Greenie Peak over forested Sangre de Cristo ridges toward the Red River Ski Area slopes and snow-dusted peaks beyond.

Some roads earn their view, and the climb to Greenie Peak is one of them. You leave town up Mallette Canyon Road, past Mallette Park, and the pavement gives way to Forest Road 597 and a steady climb through spruce and aspen. Loose gravel, rocky stretches and tight turns slow you down, and that is part of the pleasure. Every switchback opens a little more of the Sangre de Cristo country until the trees thin and the summit spreads out in bare, rocky ground.

The Cowboy Evening hosted by the Lewis family and crew at Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures, at 9,820 feet above town, has kept the old chuck wagon tradition alive for decades. By the summer of 2024 it had reached its 33rd season, starting that year on Tuesday, June 18 and running through Labor Day weekend.
