Sunday, November 1, 2026

There is a particular quiet to a Sunday morning in Red River, especially the morning after Halloween, when the clocks have fallen back an hour and the town has gained an extra hour of sleep. It is a good moment to remember that this small mountain town has reinvented itself more than once, and that the welcoming community you find on Main Street today grew out of people who simply refused to leave when the boom ended.

Last Gold and First Frost: A Halloween Saturday on the Enchanted Circle

Wheeler Peak and surrounding peaks viewed from Eagle Nest, New Mexico.

Saturday, October 31, 2026

Halloween morning arrived cloudy and cold in Red River, 39 degrees and feeling like the mid-30s in a light west wind, but the day improves as it goes. Clouds give way to partly sunny skies by late morning, the high reaches about 50 degrees, and west winds pick up to around 13 miles per hour with gusts near 25, so a warm layer earns its place on any walk today. There are no weather alerts for the area, sunset comes at 6:05 PM, and the dry, clearing afternoon is well timed for costumes, cameras, and one last October drive around the Enchanted Circle.

Three snowshoers in snow-covered pines at Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area above Red River.

Wednesday, October 28, 2026

For the first time in four decades, winter will arrive on Bobcat Pass without the groomed trails of Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area. Owners Geoff Goins and Ellen Miller-Goins have announced that the ski area, tucked into the Carson National Forest above Red River, will not open for the 2026-27 season. In a message posted on the area's own website, they wrote plainly that this season Enchanted Forest will not open, that the decision took a long time to accept, and that they will not be operating the ski area this winter.
